What is EC Technology?

Electrocoagulation, or “EC,” is a wastewater & industrial processed water treatment method. “Electro” refers to applying an electrical charge to water in a controlled environment, and “coagulation” is the process of ionizing then separating the particles in the water. These particles, accepting a positive or negative charge, bond together like magnets to form an agglomeration which can be easily removed, resulting in clear water.

Introducing OilTrap ElectroPulse

We’ve perfected the art of electrocoagulation to develop our own unique process: OilTrap ElectroPulse. Our technology removes any size of suspended solids, including heavy metals, hazardous metals, and oil & grease, without requiring any messy filters or harsh chemicals. Unlike other EC treatment processes, ElectroPulse won’t cause scaling or plateup on our cell plates and electrodes—our EC cells never need to be cleaned. ElectroPulse is the foundation that makes our OilTrap water treatment systems a comprehensive solution, from start to finish.

With the ability to process as little as 5 gallons per minute to more than 300 gallons per minute, OilTrap ElectroPulse EC systems have a low operating cost, complete automation for ease of maintenance, a small footprint, and most importantly, our systems are extremely effective in treating nearly any type of industrial water for recycle and discharge.

  • No messy filters
  • No harsh chemicals
  • Environmentally friendly
  • Fully automated operation
  • 99.8% removal of total suspended solids (TSS)
  • 96.7% removal of oil & grease
  • 99.9% removal of zinc

OilTrap System Benefits

OilTrap EC cells don’t plate up or scale
Our unique ElectroPulse EC process takes place within our cells. The cells manipulate an electrical current that is applied to the water, causing both coagulation of particles as well as oxidation of heavy metals and organics within the water. Electrolysis occurs, creating microbubbles that attach to the coagulated particles, causing them to become buoyant. The coagulated particles, heavy metals, and organics float to the surface in a tank following the ElectroPulse processing, where they are removed with a sweep, leaving clear water ready for recycle or discharge.

OilTrap cells have a distinct advantage over the average EC cell. When electrolysis occurs within the average EC cell, the electrical current from the metal anode and cathode acts as a magnet for hardness, attracting calcium, magnesium, manganese, and salt. This hardness builds up on the electrodes and is commonly referred to as “plating” or “scaling,” and reacts similarly to a shielded or insulated wire—the electrical current can’t pass through it. As a result, the system performance plummets due to loss of efficiency, and the solution for most EC providers is to keep a large supply of hazardous acid on hand to wash the cells with, or to manually scrape the electrodes frequently.

OilTrap has a more efficient and environmentally safe solution.

Our innovative ElectroPulse technology actually repels hardness from the electrodes in our cells. Our cells have been designed to never plate up or scale, meaning our systems operate continuously at maximum performance, with no harsh acid washing and no cumbersome scraping and cleaning—ever.

Custom power supplies
Our state of the art power supplies are manufactured in house, and feature a compact and lightweight design. Weighing only 15lbs, these power supplies are easily replaceable in the unlikely event of a malfunction. They come complete with digital power indicators, and are fully automated for seamless integration into the system. We designed these power supplies with energy efficiency as a priority: our power supplies deliver clean and consistent DC power, allowing the entire system to operate at 208/230 VAC / single phase / 30 amps—the same power required to operate a household clothes dryer.

Touchscreen interface
Automation and complete control of the system is now at your fingertips with OilTrap’s new touchscreen interface. Operate, monitor, and troubleshoot each component of the system in real time using OilTrap’s custom interactive software. Automatic data logging allows us to predict trends and monitor performance to keep your system running optimally. OilTrap can update your software and communicate with your system directly via satellite or phone uplink right from our headquarters. Our touchscreen interface is NEMA rated to ensure water resistance and durability, and comes with lifetime software support.
